Qingdao Customs Seizes Inward Smuggled E-Waste and Slag

On August 20, under the GACC command, Qingdao Customs District carried out the second round of the “Blue Sky 2019” campaign against inward waste smuggling. By taking action simultaneously in Shandong and Liaoning provinces, totally 47 anti-smuggling officers busted 4 smuggling rings, captured 6 criminal suspects, and seized over 4,300 tons of solid waste including e-waste and slag, detaining 4,130 tons at the sites.    

 

Allegedly, used electronic devices (including laptops, batteries and cellphone motherboards) were smuggled inward by false declaration as wood. These used devices, totaling 132 tons, were all identified to be electronic waste prohibited from import into China.

 

At a customs-control site, about 4,000 tons of fine iron powder as declared were chemically identified to be slag made from ground iron-oxide sheets. Such slag belongs to solid waste prohibited from import.

 

Additionally, the Customs also seized over 170 tons of waste plastics imported under false licenses.

 

At present, the aforesaid cases are under further investigation.
