07/23/2018

Customs seizure of the specimen of endangered coral—Pocillopora damicornis

On July 16, Shanghai Wildlife Identification Center confirmed that 2 specimen corals earlier seized by Hangzhou Customs were endangered species, including 1 specimen of Porites pukoensis (Vaughan, 1907), weighing 0.278 kilogram, and 1 specimen of Pocillopora damicornis, weighing 4.455 kilograms that’s the individually heaviest of this kind seized in Hangzhou so far.

On May 31, Xiaoshan Airport Customs House, subordinate to Hangzhou Customs District, seized the 2 specimens of endangered corals from inside the luggage of an inbound passenger from Singapore.

As per the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES) and the “Administrative Regulations of the P. R. China on Import and Export of Endangered Wildlife”, any passenger is prohibited from carrying and mailing endangered species and their products inbound and outbound without relevant certificates issued by state administration of endangered species. At present, Hangzhou Customs has detained the 2 specimen corals for further investigation.
