On the early morning of July 14, in Nanning Customs District, more than 150 officers took a special campaign codenamed “GN1616”in Nanning and Chongzuo cities to crack a rice smuggling gang, targeting rice about 10,000 tons worth RMB50 million. As a result, 26 criminal suspects were captured and over 100 tons of rice seized on spot.
In early March, the Customs personnel found the rice in some of local stores suspected of being smuggled in. Following that clue, the Customs began to investigate the smuggling chain in a reverse way: marketing→hiding and package replacement→smuggling inward. Through the investigation, the smuggling gang led by Li was confirmed to smuggle rice inward across non-customs places along China-Vietnam border, transport to a processing mill in Chongzuo city for hiding, then replace with the package of a domestic mill, and finally sell them on the grain market of Nanning. It is found out that this smuggling gang has smuggled in about 10,000 tons of rice since December 2014. Now Nanning Customs has established a special team further to investigate and resolve this case.
