Starting from January 1, 2015, inward passengers can pay taxes by wiping cards on the POS system installed on the Customs declaration desks at the ports, announced Huangpu Customs District.
Before, if he needs to pay taxes, an inward passenger entering through one certain port located in Huangpu Customs district shall firstly pick up a Bill for Customs Tax Payment, pay the taxes at a commercial bank stationed nearby, return the Bill to Customs officers for verification and endorsement and finish the whole procedure by taking away the dutiable items he has bought. If he is so unlucky as to pay taxes during the peaks hours, the passenger needs to line up and wait long at the bank’s counter. Now with the POS system at the Customs control venues, the whole process will become much easier and less time-consuming.
Mr. Guo, a businessman from Taiwan province, is a regular visitor of the Terminal for Hong Kong and Macau Passengers at Humen Port. Since he travels across the Taiwan Straits a lot, he will take with him some Taiwan made tobaccos and liquor for his mainland friends. “The Customs now has the POS system. It is a convenience for the passengers. More than that, passengers can take less cash along. It is much safer”, said Guo.
According to Liu Wei, Deputy Chief of Passenger Luggage Control Section of Taiping Customs House (affiliated to Huangpu Customs District), it is common among international passengers to take with them a small amount of cash when they are entering through the Terminal for Hong Kong and Macau Passengers at Humen port, a Terminal that directly connects with the Hong Kong International Airport. Before, passengers would have to go for currency exchange before tax payment. POS system installed not only brings convenience to passengers but also cut the time they will spent on Customs procedures.
