On March 22, Hangzhou Customs seized live animals from within an inbound mail declared as candies, including live centipedes, mantises and lizards.
That afternoon, the Customs personnel in Post Office found the X-rayed image of two “candies” parcels showing abnormal. Through out-of-box audit, a number of concealed animals like lizards were discovered in the parcels, with some having “broken” original package and “walking” around in the parcels.
Live animals from abroad without official quarantine are likely bringing with harmful microbes and viruses, threatening domestic ecological security. So China rules by law that the import of animals by any organizations or individuals must be through quarantine certification and Customs declaration.
