Gongbei Customs Destroys 57 Tons of Smuggled Frozen Foods
06/23/2016

On the morning of June 16, in the garbage power plant of Zhuhai City, Gongbei Customs made a centralized destruction of smuggled frozen foods such as frozen chicken claws, chicken wings, and beefsteaks, totaling 57 tons worth over RMB1.43 Million.

According to the Customs information, the destroyed frozen foods came from three smuggling cases that were cracked recently, with the biggest one cracked on January 30. That day, officers from the anti-smuggling department of Zhongshan Customs House (affiliated to Gongbei Customs District) intercepted the ship ZhuWan 3863, seizing 44 tons of smuggled frozen food worth RMB1.04 Million.

Through official identification, the frozen foods were mostly from epidemic areas or indeterminable places in the USA and Brazil, thus incompliant with Chinas food safety standards. To ensure harmless non-left-over destruction, the Customs transported the frozen foods from Zhongshan to the Zhuhai garbage power plant by using omni-sealed steel-cabinet trucks, with special officers assigned to escort the transportation and supervise subsequent disposal by incineration.

Since this year, Gongbei Customs has been actively carrying out Gateway Sword 2016 campaign to crack down on smuggling of safety-sensitive goods in key fields or channels on waters and at non-Customs places. From January to May, this Customs has cracked 7 cases of frozen food smuggling, with 173.2 tons seized worth a total of RMB3,627,000.
