GUANGZHOU, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Three fruit-smuggling gangs and eight suspects were arrested by customs authorities in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guangdong Province, involving 660 million yuan (102.1 million US dollars).

According to the customs police, the gangs smuggled 16,500 tonnes of fruits, including durian, since April 2019. Initial investigations into the case showed that the criminals purchased fresh fruits in Thailand and transferred them to China via Vietnam, by using fabricated trade contracts and documents. Customs police set up a task force to carry out further investigations.
