The Customs seizes Chia seeds that are prohibited from post entry.
Recently, Jiangmen Customs District-subordinate Heshan Customs House seized active Chia seeds, weighing 907 grams, in an express post from the USA.
According to relevant regulations, Chia seeds (Slvia Hispanica) are the food materials importable only after being deactivated and going through proper procedures. But the posted-in seeds were still active, without quarantine certificate, unknown in origin and variety, thus having the risk to harm China’s eco-security.
As per the “Catalogue of Animals, Plants,Animal and Plant Products and Other Quarantine Objects Prohibited from being Carried or Posted into China”, plant propagation materials are prohibited from post entry, so Heshan Customs conducted destruction over these Chia seeds.
