Customs seizure of 11 endangered wood products
On November 26, Zhejiang Forestry Product Testing Station identified 11 pieces of endangered wood products, including 1 wood sculpture and 10 wood bracelets, earlier seized by Xiaoshan Airport Customs House subordinate to Hangzhou Customs District. Therein, the sculpture was made of red sandalwood (Latin: Pterocarpus santalinus), weighing 3.95 kilograms, and the 10 bracelets were made of yellow sandalwood (Latin: Dalbergia bariensis), weighing 0.59 kilogram.
Several days ago, in control of an inbound flight, the Airport Customs officers seized the wood sculpture of a portrait in one passenger’s luggage and the 10 wood bracelets in the luggage of two passengers.
As per the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and China’s Regulations on Import and Export of Endangered Wildlife, red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) and yellow sandalwood (Dalbergia bariensis) are both endangered plants and thus prohibited from entry and exit by carry or by post without relevant permits issued by the Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office of China.
