02/12/2019

On January 16, 2019, China’s mainland Customs and Hong Kong Customs took a joint anti-smuggling operation at No.9 international wharf in Hong Kong SAR, seizing 2,070 kilograms of ivory concealed in 5 cartons and 8,268 kilograms of pangolin scales in 171 bags. Now, this case is under further investigation.

From 2017 through 2018, China Customs seized 340 criminal cases of smuggling endangered species and their products, including 81 ivory smuggling cases, with detained ivory reaching 1,470.1 kilograms.

In recent years, China Customs has been in close information exchange and joint operations with law-enforcement agencies of Malaysia, Vietnam, Kenya, Nigeria, Hong Kong SAR, etc. China and Malaysia Customs jointly seized tons of smuggled ivory, busting a number of cross-border smuggling rings. By cooperating with Kenyan and Nigerian police respectively, China Customs made 3 smuggling suspects repatriated from abroad. Due to its good performance in CITES enforcement, China Customs has been repeatedly awarded the CITES Secretary-General’s Certificate of Commendation and the Clark R.Bavin WildlifeLaw Enforcement Award.

As per the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES) and China’s Law on Wildlife Protection, China prohibits the import and export of endangered wildlife and the products without the permit issued by the Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office of China. As from December 31, 2017, China has banned commercial sale and processing of ivory. And China Customs always keeps serious crackdown on the smuggling of ivory and other wildlife products by law.
