Guangzhou Customs Seizes Live Snakes in Inbound Express Parcel
07/06/2020

Recently, Guangzhou Customs seized 4 live snakes (about 80cm long each) in an inbound express parcel (of footwear) at Baiyun International Airport. The 4 snakes, suspected of being smuggled, were identified to be red-tail grass snakes (Gonyosoma oxycephalum) of non-Chinese origin.

To protect domestic eco-security, Guangzhou Customs intensively combats the smuggling of foreign wild animals by using big-data analysis, AI technique, CT and X-ray equipment with manual out-of-box inspection on inbound-outbound goods and parcels.

Customs reminder: in accordance with China’s entry-exit quarantine law, live snake is prohibited from inward carry and post without domestic official permit and external quarantine certificate; according to the Customs Law, legal or criminal liability is imposed on the act or crime of smuggling that’s arising from false declaration or concealment of banned, restricted or taxable goods or animals and plants in inward-outward carry and post.
